Be true to you
"At the moment personal style is more fashionable than any specific trend," says Bridal TM's Deahne Copeand. "Your gown should reflect your inner being so that it remains timeless and speaks to those whom you love." In fact, your gown is the strongest representation of personal style you'll ever make, so stay true to yourself and don't be swayed by the ideas of those around you.

Texture
Designers are loving working with fabric textures at the moment, says Deahne. "Texture looks luscious in photographs and as most gowns are white and ivory, texture adds another dimension to the gown." Think French lace, Swarovski beading, and gorgeous fabrics such as silk satins, taffetas and tulles.

Colour

Brides are also branching out from the traditional white and ivory coloured gowns and choosing a shade that better suits their skin tone. "We are seeing a shift in colour choice to soft pearls, frosts and pale pinks in luxurious satins," says Deahne.

Expert tips
1. The greatest gown mistake is not allowing enough in the budget for the gown itself and alterations. The average gown is $2,200 and you must allow $200 - $300 for alterations to perfect the fit to your body.

2. A great starting place for ideas is magazines, then head to your favourite designer's website.  Bridal boutiques take into consideration your wedding theme, time of year and time of day, budget, and personal style - so tag and print pages that reflect your preferences.

3. Bring your decision maker with you. If you've done your research correctly and your stylist in store is professional, the very first gown you try could be the one.  For this reason, allow for one day of gown shopping and make sure you take someone whose opinion you value.

4. Don't try on gowns outside of your budget. You're destined to fall in love with it and then you'll be disappointed that you can't have it!
